What is Face Lift Surgery?
Facelift surgery is the treatment method in the category of cosmetic surgery, which is preferred to make the face look younger. Facelift surgery is also included in the medical literature as “rhytidectomy”. During the application of facelift surgery, the skin hanging from both sides of the face and the SMAS tissue under the skin are pulled in the upward cross-vector direction. This surgery is the process of replacing the fat tissues, SMAS tissue, and skin that have lost their elasticity due to gravity and bone atrophy as age progresses. In the meantime, permanent fillings or implants over the bone can be used to treat bone atrophy. Neck lift surgery performed with the same logic often accompanies this surgery.

Why is Face Lift Done?
While the age advances, there may be some changes in the facial features and appearance of the face due to age. With age, the skin may appear looser, saggier, and less elastic. In some parts of the face, fat deposits can be seen due to certain conditions, and in some cases, fat accumulation can be seen less. Facelift surgery is performed to replace these sagging tissues. At the same time, the reasons for performing facelift surgery can be listed as follows;
Excess skin on the lower jawline, due to sagging skin in the area known as “jowl” among the people,
Due to the lines formed around the nose and around the mouth,
Facelift surgery can be performed due to lubrication or sagging in the neck area.
What Should Be Taken Into
Consideration After the Face Lift Operation?
Medical complications that may occur after all aesthetic operations may also occur after facelift surgery. In other words, the infection may occur in facelift surgery or complications may occur due to anesthesia. Paying attention to the lifestyle after the surgery and the doctor’s recommendations can prevent complications from occurring. The following factors may increase the risk of complications after facelift surgery, so the following conditions should be considered;
Blood thinners/supplements; Medicines or supplements that increase the flow of the blood or blood thinners can prevent the blood from clotting easily and increase the risk of developing a hematoma after surgery.
Medical conditions; If the patient has a health problem that prevents blood clotting, he is not a suitable patient for facelift surgery. Diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure complicate the healing process of wounds and increase the risk of developing hematomas and cardiac complications.
To smoke; Smoking complicates the healing process of wounds after facelift surgery.
How to Prepare for
Face Lift Operation?
History of Disease; Analyzes are made regarding past and present diseases, previous surgeries and complications arising from these surgeries, smoking status, and drug or alcohol use.
Drug review; The patient should tell the doctor the name and dosage of all medications that need to be used regularly, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies, vitamins, and other dietary supplements.
Facial Examination; The plastic surgeon takes pictures of the face from many angles. At the same time, the bone structure of the face, the shape of the face, the distribution of fat percentages on the face, and the quality of the skin are analyzed and it is decided whether or not the facelift operation will be performed.
To Whom is Face Lifting Performed?
Facelift operation can be applied to patients with the following criteria;
– Patients with sagging face and neck, but men and women whose skin maintains good elasticity.
– patients whose face and skin have retained their flexibility, but who have sagging cheeks and skin
– The most suitable patient profile for brow lift surgery is sagging of the skin in the upper part of the face and patients whose eyes appear unconscious and old, due to sagging, facelift operation can be applied.
How to Perform a Facelift Operation?
The facelift operation is performed as follows;
– When planning the facelift operation, first of all, the patient’s youth photos are looked at and how aging occurs, where and what kind of sagging occurs on the face are analyzed.
Then an incision is made on the skin. Procedures are applied to skin tissues, mimic muscles, and loosened tissues downwards. The interventions made to these deep tissues under the skin, the loosened, sagging spots are taken to the places where they should be on a normal face and the existing deformations are treated.
– Facelift surgery is performed by making small incisions of 1 to 2 millimeters with the endoscopic treatment method. Since these incisions remain in the hair, there is no surgical scar.
How Long Do Facelift
Procedures Take?
Facelift operations can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia depending on the situation. Along with facelift surgery, eyelid aesthetics and neck lift operations can also be performed together with facelift operation. Therefore, the operation may differ according to the number of operations to be performed.
How many years does facelift surgery add to your life?
With face-lift surgery, patients can go back five, ten, or even twenty years. This is directly related to the surgical technique and the extent of the patient’s skin problems. For patients with very sagging skin, very noticeable and satisfactory results can be obtained when applied together with superficial resurfacing applications to the skin. In deep plane face lifts, this effect is very good and lasts a long time.
When only the top layer of skin is removed or SMAS is applied, the effect may not last as long. Important facial ligaments are released during a deep plane face-lift by entering under the skin and SMAS tissue and undermining these structures. This allows us to hang the facial skin and SMAS tissue more securely and permanently. If these ligaments do not become free, they will always stand there as a force against our hanging force and reduce the effect of the surgery. Therefore, while superficial techniques are generally applied to younger patients with very mild sagging problems, deep plane techniques are generally applied to elderly patients and patients with severe sagging.
How many days does face-lift surgery take to heal?
Face-lift surgery is an operation that takes between three and seven hours. The surgery that is performed may vary according to the problems on the patient’s face. While a mid-face lift, neck lift, or both can be performed, a temple lift and eyebrow lift can also be added to this surgery. Fat injections to the face and neck, liposuction, and eyelid surgery can also be added to these procedures. Based on a patient who has all of these procedures, the duration of the operation may take up to seven hours. Of course, a patient who has only a mid-face lift and a group of patients in which all procedures are performed will not heal at the same rate.
Generally, patients who did not undergo any procedure around the eyes but only had a mid-face lift are my patients who recover the fastest. When I combine this with a neck lift and open-neck liposuction, the recovery time is slightly longer, and patients who have eyelid surgery and lipofilling have the longest recovery times.
Patients usually spend the first forty-eight hours in the hospital after surgery. They have corsets and neck drains on their faces for the first twenty-four hours. The reason for this is to prevent blood accumulation under the skin. After twenty-four hours, the drains are removed, and the corset is removed. Swelling, edema, and bruising are seen on the face during this period, which is absolutely normal and should not be a concern. In the first forty-eight hours, significant leaking and bleeding occurred from the seams. In this case, it is not a cause for concern.
In this process, patients are recommended to take a walk in the hospital corridor and do breathing exercises in order to get active and relieve the pulmonary edema that occurs during anesthesia. After twenty-four hours, if the patient feels better, dressings are made, and the patient is discharged at the end of the forty-eighth hour. While being discharged, it should not be forgotten that the face is stretched more than the desired level; if the eye corners are lifted to a higher level than the desired level, this will definitely return to the normal level of lifting. Edema and tension are usually still present on the seventh day, during the patient’s checkup. On the fourteenth day, the edema decreases and the sutures are red.
Between the tenth and fourteenth days, we recommend patients return to their social and business lives; however,however the recovery is still not complete. Wounds are slightly yellow, but they can be hidden with make-up, and scars can be hidden by hair. For the first six weeks, it is not recommended to lie face down, open the mouth too much, or feed with small foods without forcing it. In the third and fourth months, the scars are no longer visible, and the hair can be tied from behind for camouflage. In the first year, when you look carefully, you will have scars that can hardly be seen, and the aging process continues.
Will There Be Any Scarring Following a Facelift?
The incisions that are used in face-lift surgery are not visible from the outside, as they remain behind the ear or in the scalp. The incision part in front of the ear may only be visible a little at first, but then it goes down to a level that cannot be seen. It takes about a year for scars to become difficult to notice. Many facial operations can now be performed through very small incisions using an endoscope, but an incision is unavoidable when a deep plane face-lift is planned. However, as long as no complications arise, there will be no visible scars.
How Many Hours Does Facelift Surgery Take?
The duration of facelift surgery varies according to the technique used and the size of the problems on the face. This period varies between two hours and seven hours. I usually use the deep plane face-lift technique, but with techniques such as the superficial skin lift and SMA application, this process can be completed in as little as two hours. When it is done in the deep plane, in a standard patient who will usually have a mid-face lift and neck lift, this procedure will be completed in three to four hours; when open neck liposuction, jowl and neck lower face liposuction, bichectomy, eyelid surgery, temple stretching, and eyebrow lifting are added to this, this period can take up to six-seven hours .
How long does lip-lift surgery take?
Lip-lift surgery takes approximately an hour. It is usually done under local anesthesia. The procedure begins with an incision made at the base of the nose, where the nose meets the skin. By calculating the white lip to red lip ratio beforehand, the skin section that needs to be removed is marked, and the next step is to remove this skin along with the subcutaneous tissue. Muscle tissue is usually not removed. Bleeding control is achieved.
The incision edges are stitched together with thin meltable or non-melting sutures, and the surgery is completed and the dressing is started. Lip edema may occur in the first two to three days, but this is temporary. Again, there will be leaking and bleeding in the first two days; there is no need to worry. During these periods, it is recommended that the patients use antibiotics and not force the mouth too much by consuming soft food.
Is lip plumping the same as lip lifting?
Lip plumping is the process of filling the lips with temporary or permanent products. A lip lift, on the other hand, lifts the lip by taking away the skin and subcutaneous tissue between the lips and nose. The two processes are different from each other. People with thin lips can also get a lip lift to make their upper lip thicker. Because it turns the lip outward, the red part of the lip becomes more prominent.
The purpose of filling is actually the same thing besides adding volume: to make the red part of the lip more visible by turning the lip outward. Therefore, although these processes are different, they have basically the same effect. Patients who don’t need a lip lift should get lip augmentation instead. Sometimes both procedures can be done on the same patient at different times.
Can Lip Lifting Be Done Alongside Other Face Lift Procedures?
Lip-lift surgery is often performed together with face-lift surgery. Because lip-lift surgery creates a very good rejuvenation effect on the face, in addition to the face-lift surgery we do to improve the look of the face, the lip-lift surgery also helps improve the look of the face.
With age, the skin and subcutaneous tissues sag, the brows and temples fall, tissue and bone atrophy happens, and the space between the lips and nose gets bigger. So, these people often need a face lift and a lip lift at the same time. Both surgeries can be done at the same time.
FAQ
When Is the Most Appropriate Time for a Facelift?
There is no age limit for facelift surgery. Even though most people who get a facelift are between the ages of 40 and 60, people between the ages of 70 and 80 can also get facelift surgeries.
Is lip-lift surgery permanent?
Lip-lift surgery is a permanent procedure. We can’t stop the skin from stretching, losing its elasticity, and getting older, though. For this reason, the lip-nose distance that we shorten will continue to lengthen a little as we age. The genetic structure of the individual, smoking, an unhealthy diet, stress, and environmental conditions are effective in this process.
Is face-lift surgery permanent?
Face-lift surgery is a permanent procedure. But what we cannot stop is aging. Aging continues for a patient who has had face-lift surgery. A face-lift is, in general, the process of pulling back sagging tissues and filling in missing volume. The skin and subcutaneous tissue will continue to sag over time due to aging, and the atrophy process in the bones and subcutaneous tissue will continue.
When does the lip-lift heal?
In the first few days after the lip-lift surgery, there may be swelling and bleeding in the form of leakage in the lip, this is very normal. In the firs week, the swelling is usually gone. Stitches are removed after eight-ten days. However, if your doctor has used melting stitches, there may be no suture removal. Moreover, there will be redness at the incision site for two-three months, but it will pass in the sixth month. After the lip-lift surgery, a small amount of scar tissue remains at the junction of the nose and skin in the long term, and it can be easily camouflaged with make-up.
