What is Lip-lift Surgery?
Lip lift surgery is an aesthetic treatment method applied because the lip-nose distance is large or the upper lip is thin. It is one of the procedures performed for smile aesthetics. It can also be done to show the upper teeth a little while laughing. The short lip-nose distance may bother some women. Some women prefer to overline their lips while applying lipstick because they are uncomfortable with this situation. In this surgical procedure performed to repair this situation, the skin is removed from the white part of the upper lip and the upper lip is lifted a little, and both the upper lip is thickened, the lip-nose distance is shortened, and the upper teeth are somewhat visible. Another issue to be considered here is that while pulling the upper lip up, it is necessary to analyze the other facial features well. This pulling situation can be adjusted according to the facial features.

How is Lip Lift Surgery Performed?
Lip lift surgery is a preferred aesthetic surgery method in cases where the upper lip is smaller than the lower lip and it seems to be absent. Lip lift surgery is performed by following the steps below.
- Local anesthesia is applied to the patient.
- By paying attention to the nose – lip distance / red part of the upper lip ratio, the skin and subcutaneous fat are taken with texture.
- After removing excess skin and fat tissue, the lip area is repaired and sutured.
- Stitches are removed one week after the lip lift surgery, or if dissolving stitches are used, the stitches may not be removed.
- There may be a pink line under the nose after the stitches are removed. This line disappears with time.
- Lip lift surgery is in the category of permanent surgery.
There are different types of lip lift surgery. These types can be applied in various ways. Types of lip lift surgery can be applied as follows;
Direct Lip Lift; This type of lip lift surgery is also known as “gullwing”. With this surgery, a more prominent lip line is created. It is applied by taking a thin piece of skin tissue from the upper lip. The incision is made at the junction of the red lip with the white skin.
Bull Horn Lip-lift: It is the most preferred lip lift surgery today. The incision is just below the nostrils. The incision line may extend slightly into the nostrils to hide the scar that will form.
Corner Lip-lift: It is applied by making an incision in both corners of the mouth. A small amount of skin and adipose tissue is taken.
Italian Lip-lift: It is performed by making two incisions under the two nostrils.

How Does the Healing Process
After Lip Lift Take Place?
In lip lift surgery, facial edema can be seen during the recovery period, just like in nose surgery. This facial edema is considered normal by surgeons. The edema on the face will go away in a few days. If the surgeon has ended the operation with aesthetic stitches, there is no need to remove the stitches. Bleeding may occur at times during the healing process. If bleeding occurs from time to time, it is necessary to be examined by the surgeon without losing time. The point to be considered in the healing process is to use the drugs recommended by the surgeon and to care for the wound. At the same time, there should be no problems in the person’s speech and mouth shape during the healing process.
When Lip-Lift Surgery
May Be Necessary?
With lip lift surgery, the distance between the lips and nose is shortened. It is an operation applied to make the upper lip more visible. Lip lift surgery is not a type of surgery that can be applied to everyone and in every situation.
– Lip lift surgery is not applied to patients undergoing “rabbit lip” treatment.
– Lip lift surgery is not applied to people whose lips are extremely thin and who have undergone lip surgery or treatment before.
– Lip lift surgery can be applied in cases where the upper lip is extremely thin.
– If the person complains about the thinness of her upper lip, lip lift surgery can be applied.
Only the surgeon can decide whether lip lift surgery is applicable. Therefore, it is useful to consult a surgeon.

FAQ
Is Lip Plumping and Lip-Lift the Same?
Lip plumping is the job of increasing the volume of the lip by injecting temporary or permanent products into the lip. However, lip-lift is the job of lifting the lip by removing the skin and subcutaneous tissue between the lips and nose. The two processes are different from each other. Lip-lift surgery can also be performed for individuals with thin lips for the purpose of thickening the upper lip. Because it turns the lip outward, the red part of the lip becomes more prominent. The purpose of filling is actually the same thing besides adding volume; to make the red part more visible by turning the lip outward. Therefore, although these processes are different , they have basically the same effect . Lip augmentation is recommended for patients who do not have an indication for lip-lift surgery, sometimes both procedures can be applied to the patient in different sessions.
Can Lip-Lifting Be Combined With Face Lift Applications?
Lip-lift surgery is often performed together with face-lift surgery. Because lip-lift surgery creates a very good rejuvenation effect on the face. Thus, in addition to the face-lift surgery we perform for facial rejuvenation, the lip-lift surgery also makes an additional contribution to this rejuvenation. With aging, the skin and subcutaneous tissues sag, eyebrows and temples fall , tissue and bone atrophy occurs , and at the same time the distance between the lips and nose becomes longer . Therefore, these patients often need a lip-lift in addition to a face-lift, and both surgeries can be performed in the same session.
Is lip-lift surgery permanent?
Lip-lift surgery is a permanent procedure. However, it is impossible for us to stop the skin from stretching, losing its elasticity, therefore, aging. For this reason, the lip-nose distance that we shorten will continue to lengthen a little as we age. Decrease in skin elasticity, decrease in subcutaneous tissue volume, decrease in bone volume are the reasons for this elongation.
Genetic structure of the individual, smoking , unhealthy diet, stress and environmental conditions are effective in this process.
How long does lip-lift surgery take?
Lip-lift surgery takes approximately an hour. It is usually done under local anaesthesia. The procedure begins with an incision made at the base of the nose where the nose meets the skin. By calculating the white lip / red lip ratio beforehand, the skin section that needs to be removed is marked and the next step is to remove this skin together with the subcutaneous tissue. Muscle tissue is usually not removed. Bleeding control is achieved. The incision edges are stitched together with thin meltable or non-melting sutures, and the surgery is completed and dressing is started. Lip edema may occur in the first two-three days, but this is temporary. Again, there will be leaking and bleeding in the first two days, there is no need to worry. During these periods, it is recommended that the patients use antibiotics and not force the mouth too much by consuming soft food.
When does the lip-lift heal?
In the first few days after the lip-lift surgery, there may be swelling and bleeding in the form of leakage in the lip, this is very normal. In the firs week, the swelling is usually gone. Stitches are removed after eight-ten days. However, if your doctor has used melting stitches, there may be no suture removal. Moreover, there will be redness at the incision site for two-three months, but it will pass in the sixth month. After the lip-lift surgery, a small amount of scar tissue remains at the junction of the nose and skin in the long term, and it can be easily camouflaged with make-up.
