Eyelid Aesthetic
With the aging of people and the effect of gravity, excess skin may occur on the lower and upper eyelids. The eyelid skin may droop or there may be excess fat bagging on the lower eyelid. This is not considered normal, both from a health and aesthetic point of view. Sagging skin can interfere with vision. In such cases, eyelid aesthetics is applied. With eyelid surgery, sagging skin on the eyelids is removed. Along with the skin, some muscle and fat tissues are usually removed. However, adipose tissues are not removed as much as before, and adipose tissues are approached more conservatively today. A small amount of fat is removed on the upper lids, and in lower lid surgery, it is aimed to fill the pitting by spreading the fat to the bone area where the pitting is called the tear trough instead of removing it. There may be a scar on the upper lid, but since this line is exactly at the fold of the eyelid, it does not pose a problem in terms of aesthetics and health. In the lower eyelid, the incision is made from the bottom of the eyelashes, and this does not pose an aesthetic problem.

How is Eyelid Aesthetics Performed?
Eyelid aesthetics is the process of removing excess skin and sagging muscle tissues in the eye area. Lower eyelid and upper eyelid aesthetic surgery are performed in different ways. Since the surgical scars do not pose an aesthetic problem, the incision is made from the folding point of the eyelid.
Eyelid surgery is performed as follows;
Lower Eyelid Aesthetic Surgery; with aging, the lower eyelid, which cannot defy gravity droops.
- General anesthesia or local anesthesia can be applied.
- The surgical incision is opened from the bottom of the eyelashes.
- Fat packs are reached by entering under the orbicular muscle around the eyes. The sagging fat packs are transferred to the tear trough area.
- Additional procedures called canthopexy/ or canthoplasty are applied to avoid problems such as retraction and outward turning in the lower eyelid.
- Some skin and muscle tissue is removed
- The incision is closed with sutures
Upper Eyelid Aesthetic Surgery;
- Local anesthesia is applied.
- An incision is made in the fold line of the eyelid.
- After the removal of excess skin and muscles, if there is excess in the fat packs, some are removed. The operation is completed by providing sufficient tension.
- The stitches can stay on the eyelid between 5 days and 6 days.
- As a result of removing the stitches, a pink line may occur around the eyes. This line disappears over time.

Aesthetics Is Applied?
It is applied in patients who look old or have vision problems due to excess upper eyelids, and patients with fat bags on the lower eyelids. The expectation is also very important in this surgery. The post-operative expectation should be asked to the patient beforehand.
Is Eyelid Aesthetics Permanent?
Eyelid aesthetics are generally preferred to treat drooping of the upper eyelids due to aging. However, due to gravity and aging, the skin may continue to loosen. Therefore, eyelid aesthetic surgery is effective between eight to ten years. If the eyelid sags again after this period, the surgery can be repeated.
The recovery period of eyelid surgery covers between ten days and fourteen days. This process may vary depending on whether the patient follows the doctor’s recommendations or not. In some patients, eyelid surgery may take up to a month.
How long do eyelid surgery effects last?
Eyelid surgery in Turkey can be considered a form of face-lift surgery. It is the process of suspending sagging skin, subcutaneous muscle tissue, and fat tissues, and removing some skin. Fat parts are sometimes removed and sometimes detransferred and used in augmentation. Therefore, it has a rejuvenation effect on patients. Aging continues from where it left off, but it creates an effect that will take the patient a few years back. However, the aging process will continue.
The newly formed, tighter skin and subcutaneous tissue may still sag over time, but this period slows down even more. Eyelid surgery in Turkey is an aesthetic procedure that can be performed under short-term local anesthesia and has a great effect. Incision scars are hidden inside the upper eyelid crease and under the eyelashes in the lower eyelid.
Will there be any scars after upper eyelid surgery?
The purpose of upper eyelid surgery is not just to remove the skin. If there is excess muscle and adipose tissue, muscle and fat tissue are also removed; if the eye crease is deep and above, an eye crease is created where it should be. While doing these, the incision is usually in the eyelid crease if the patient’s eyelid crease is in its normal place, and if the eyelid crease is not in its normal place, it is 8–10 mm above the eyelashes in women and 6–8 mm above the eyelashes in men, and the patient’s new eyelid crease is created here.
Therefore, the incision is always within the eyelid crease, and there is no visible scar from the outside; the scar is hidden. Upper eyelid surgery is a 45-minute procedure performed under local anesthesia. There is no pain during the procedure. Patients can return to their social lives immediately, but it should be shared with the patient beforehand that there will be bruising on the upper eyelid in the first week.
Is eyelid surgery in Turkey risky?
There are neither significant nor life-threatening risks. These risks are different for the upper and lower eyelids. The most feared risk of upper eyelid surgery is bleeding during fat removal, but the risk is very minimal if done carefully. I have never encountered it in my own practice. Another important risk is the inability to close the eyes, which we call “lagophthalmus,” due to excess skin removal.
This may be mild in the first 24 hours of the surgery and is normal; then the eye can be closed immediately. However, if it doesn’t, consult your doctor again. Other risks include insufficient skin removal, infection, and upper eyelid retraction.
The risks of lower eyelid surgery are slightly different. The thing we fear most here is that the lower eyelid will move in a downward direction and the white part of the eye will become more visible. We call this “retraction” or “scleral show.” Sometimes, it can be severe enough to turn the lower eyelid outward, and it can be an event called ectropion.
There are various reasons for this retraction, such as excess skin removal, adhesions in deep tissues, and excessive removal of muscle tissue. Another risk is damage to the muscle that makes the eye look downward, which is very rare and not very common in practice. When it occurs, problems such as double vision and strabismus occur. We can count other risks such as infection, bleeding, and hematoma (blood accumulation).
The age range for Eyelid Aesthetic Surgery in Turkey
There is no age limit for eyelid surgery. However, it is not a common surgical method at early ages. Such problems are not encountered at an early age, as they are usually due to age-related sagging of the upper eyelid or sagging of the lower eyelid and eye bags. In middle age, the problems are still mild, and patients usually try to solve their problems with non-surgical methods. But eyelid surgery is rarely done on people younger than 30 who have eyelid asymmetry or significant eyelid muscle hypertrophy because of their genes or the way their eyes are built.
Recovery Duration of Eyelid Aesthetics
Eyelid aesthetic surgery in Turkey is usually performed under local anesthesia and sometimes under general anesthesia. Patients do not stay in the hospital after the operation, and they can return to their homes on the same day. In upper eyelid surgery, they are discharged from the hospital or clinic with a dressing made with bands covering the upper eyelids. They are discharged with a dressing made with a band that covers the incision mark on the lower eyelid surgery. In the first 2 days, edema and bruises occur around the eyes. It is very normal to have blood leakage from the dressing on the first day.
Patients are advised not to use blood thinners, herbal teas, or herbal products one week before and three days after surgery. These products increase bleeding during and after surgery. It is recommended that they control their blood pressure, and if they are using blood pressure medications, they should use these drugs regularly. After one day, the eye bands can be removed and a bath prepared.
Water and foam touching the incision are not problems. Post-operative pain is mostly absent, but I give all my patients an antibiotic to use for a few days during discharge and a pain killer to use when there is pain. On the third day, the swelling is at its maximum and now begins to decrease. It goes down to the lower parts of the face.

Is a Bath Necessary Following Eyelid Aesthetics?
It is not a problem if water touches the incisions on the eyelid after eyelid aesthetic surgery. I have almost never encountered an infection in this area. Therefore, taking a bath after surgery is not a problem. However, I still recommend our patients wash areas other than the eye area, if possible, for the first 5 days. If water or foam has touched the eye, there is no need to worry.
How Many Hours Does Eyelid Surgery in Turkey Take?
The duration of eyelid surgery varies. The duration of a standard upper eyelid surgery is approximately 45 minutes. However, if fat injection and ptosis (low eyelid) surgery are to be added to this, this period may take up to 2 hours. A standard lower eyelid surgery is a procedure that takes approximately 1.5 hours.
When Can Contact Lenses Be Used After Eyelid Surgery?
Patients cannot use contact lenses for 2 weeks after eyelid surgery. In this process, patients are recommended to use glasses. After 2 weeks, it is recommended that patients start wearing contact lenses using the lower eyelid without forcing the upper eyelid.
Is Eyelid Surgery in Turkey painful?
Eyelid surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the area being treated. Most patients do not experience significant pain during the procedure. There may be some pain and swelling after surgery, but this can usually be taken care of with painkillers and cold compresses.
